“Assessing the Independence of State Parties: An Introduction to US State Party Platforms”
“Issue Ownership in the American States”
“Fifty States Under God: Morality Politics & State Party Platforms”
“Green Faith: The Intersection of Environmentalism and Religion in the United States”
- Highlights the importance state political parties and discusses the development of state party platforms. Analyzing the ideology and content of 80 Democratic and Republican state party platforms from 2008-2010 through a coding scheme adapted from the Comparative Manifesto Project, my findings suggest our current understanding of state party politics is inadequate.
“Issue Ownership in the American States”
- Utilizes state party platforms to assess issue ownership theory. Issue ownership sets up a series of expectations for party behavior; however, few attempts have been made to test the theory directly using state party behavior. Results indicate that state parties do, in fact, adhere to the general expectations of issue ownership theory, although some of the results run contrary to national-level findings, suggesting interesting patterns of state party independence.
“Fifty States Under God: Morality Politics & State Party Platforms”
- Examines the values, rhetoric, and behavior of state party platforms on a specific subset of policies known as morality policies. Findings highlight significant differences among the parties at the state level as well as dramatic deviations of state party platforms from national platforms.
“Green Faith: The Intersection of Environmentalism and Religion in the United States”
- Examines the intersection of faith and environmentalism in the United States. Considers the long-standing hypothesis that conservative religious principles align well with efforts to conserve the natural environment. Examines public opinion data to examine the potential for increased environmental protection support from religious conservatives.
